1962 - Linguistics - Winnebago, an Indian tongue of the Sioux group, has been made the subject of Georgetown University's course on Field Methods in Linguistics. This reflects the strengthening of a tradition among American scholars to provide budding linguists with training in America's indigenous tongues. Both Edward Sapir and Leonard Bloomfield, who laid the foundations of American linguistics, devoted considerable attention to these languages.
